Survey ship Sandhyak will be commissioned into the Indian Navy on Saturday. This will further strengthen the Navy’s surveillance system on strategic waterways. In this program organized in Visakhapatnam, Defense Minister Rajnath Singh, Navy Chief Admiral R. Hari Kumar and Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief, Eastern Naval Command Vice Admiral Rajesh Pendharkar will be present.

It is one of the four survey vessels being built for the survey.

Sandhyak was handed over to the Indian Navy on 4 December. It is the first of four survey vessels being built at Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers (GRSE), Kolkata. The ship will also be involved in a variety of naval operations including surveying port access and determining safe shipping routes.

 

Capable of achieving speeds of over 18 knots

Powered by two diesel engines, the vessel is capable of achieving speeds of over 18 knots.

The ship, 110 meters long, weighing 3400 tonnes and built with 80 per cent indigenous content, is a testament to India’s growing shipbuilding capability in pursuing a self-reliant India.

It is also the harbinger of India developed in accordance with the Amrit Kaal.
